How Does the SRRV Retirement Visa Work in 2026?

The Special Resident Retiree's Visa (SRRV) is the most popular long-term visa for foreigners who want to retire in the Philippines. It grants indefinite multiple-entry status and the right to reside permanently. But the rules changed dramatically in September 2025. This guide gives you the current 2026 requirements—so you don't plan around outdated information.

💡 TL;DR (2026 Rules): Minimum age is now 40 (not 35). Deposit ranges from $15,000 to $50,000 depending on age and pension status. Processing takes 2–6 months in reality. You cannot work without a special permit, but you can own condo units and lease land.

🚨 Critical Update: September 2025 Changes

The Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) restructured the SRRV program in September 2025. Two popular programs were discontinued:

  • SRRV Smile — No longer accepts new applications
  • SRRV Human Touch — No longer accepts new applications

Existing holders of these visas keep them. But if you are applying now, only SRRV Classic and SRRV Courtesy are available. Deposit amounts also increased significantly.

What Are the 2026 Deposit Requirements?

Age GroupWith PensionWithout Pension
Age 50+$15,000 USD$30,000 USD
Age 40–49$25,000 USD$50,000 USD

The deposit must remain in a PRA-accredited Philippine bank. You earn interest, but the principal is locked unless you cancel the visa. Some programs allow conversion to eligible investments (condo, long-term lease) after one year.

Which Programs Are Still Available?

🏛️ SRRV Classic (Main Option)

The most flexible and popular program. Available to applicants aged 40 and above.

  • Deposit: $15k–$50k (see table above)
  • Deposit can convert to investments after 1 year
  • Most popular among expats
  • Spouse and dependents can be included

🤝 SRRV Courtesy

For former Filipinos, diplomats, and select categories. Special terms apply.

  • Lower deposit requirements
  • Specific eligibility criteria
  • Contact PRA directly to confirm

❌ SRRV Smile (Discontinued)

No longer accepts new applications as of September 2025. Existing holders keep their visas.

❌ SRRV Human Touch (Discontinued)

No longer accepts new applications as of September 2025. Existing holders keep their visas.

Your Three Application Routes

✅ PRA-Accredited Marketer (Recommended)

Free professional assistance. PRA pays the marketer directly—you pay nothing extra for their help.

  • Cost to you: Free (PRA pays them)
  • They guide you through document prep
  • They accompany you to PRA filing
  • Check official list: pra.gov.ph/marketers-agents

📝 Direct Application (DIY)

Walk into PRA office yourself. No agent assistance. You handle everything.

  • Cost to you: Only official PRA fees
  • Requires more research on your part
  • You file documents yourself
  • Good if you're already in Manila

❌ Private Non-Accredited Service

Unofficial agents charging $500-$600 for services that PRA-accredited marketers provide free.

  • Cost to you: $500-$600 extra
  • Not on PRA's official list
  • Same work as accredited marketers
  • Higher scam risk

🔍 How to Verify an Accredited Marketer

Before hiring anyone, check the official PRA list at pra.gov.ph/marketers-agents. Accredited marketers:

  • Are listed on the official PRA website
  • Never ask for your deposit money (it goes directly to PRA-accredited bank)
  • Never ask for your application fee (you pay PRA cashier directly)
  • Must accompany you when filing (otherwise you're considered walk-in)

Step-by-Step Application Process

  1. Gather documents from your home country. Police clearance (apostilled), medical clearance (apostilled), marriage certificate if applicable (apostilled).
  2. Enter the Philippines on a tourist visa. You cannot apply for the SRRV from abroad.
  3. Get an NBI clearance if needed. If you've been in the Philippines over 30 days, you need an NBI clearance.
  4. Open a PRA-accredited bank account. Deposit the required USD amount directly. Never give your deposit money to a marketer.
  5. Complete a medical exam in the Philippines. PRA requires an exam at an accredited clinic.
  6. Submit your application to PRA. If using an accredited marketer, they accompany you. Pay the application fee directly to the PRA cashier.
  7. Wait for approval. Official timeline is 20–30 working days. Reality is often 2–6 months.
  8. Receive your SRRV ID and passport endorsement. The Bureau of Immigration stamps your passport.

💰 Fees You Must Budget For

  • Application fee (principal): ~$1,400–$1,500 USD (one-time, paid to PRA)
  • Application fee (per dependent): ~$300 USD (one-time, paid to PRA)
  • Annual fee: $360 USD per year (covers up to 3 dependents)
  • Bank deposit: $15,000–$50,000 USD (locked, earns interest, paid directly to bank)
  • ACR I-Card: Required in addition to your SRRV ID (~$50 USD)
  • Accredited marketer assistance: FREE (PRA pays them)

⚠️ Important Restrictions

  • No employment without a permit. You cannot work for a Philippine company on the SRRV alone. You must secure an Alien Employment Permit (AEP) from DOLE first.
  • Deposit stays in the bank. The principal cannot be withdrawn unless you cancel the visa.
  • Annual fee is mandatory. Missing the $360 annual payment can jeopardize your visa status.
  • ACR I-Card required. You must also register for the ACR I-Card and file the Annual Report every year (Jan 1 – Mar 31).

🗣️ The Facebook Reality: What PRA Doesn't Tell You

  • Accredited marketers are free—don't pay private agents. If someone charges you $500-$600 for "SRRV assistance," they're not accredited.
  • Bank deposit delays are real. Some accredited banks move slowly. Open the account early.
  • Document apostille is non-negotiable. Sort this out before flying to the Philippines.
  • NBI clearance takes 2–3 weeks. Plan your tourist visa timeline around it.
  • "Fixers" outside PRA offer to fast-track for a fee. Using them risks your application.
