What Do You Need to Leave the Philippines Legally?
Flying into the Philippines is easy. Flying out has its own rules. Depending on how long you stayed, you may need an Exit Clearance (ECC), a Travel Tax payment, or both. The good news: if you plan ahead, leaving is simple. Here is your pre-departure blueprint.
💡 The Quick Answer: Stayed less than 6 months? Just fly out — no extra papers. Stayed 6 months or more on a tourist visa? You need an ECC (Exit Clearance). Stayed 1 year or more, or hold a long-term visa? You may also owe the Travel Tax.
The Two Things to Check Before Your Flight
Do I Need an Exit Clearance (ECC)?
The ECC is a “goodbye paper” from the Bureau of Immigration. Learn who needs it, what it costs, and how many days before your flight to apply.
💰Do I Have to Pay the Travel Tax and Terminal Fee? Most short-stay tourists pay nothing. Long-term residents often pay ₱1,620. See the full exemption list and how to pay.
Your Pre-Departure Checklist
🧳 7 Days to 72 Hours Before Your Flight
- Count your total days in the Philippines (check your entry stamp).
- If 6 months or more: apply for your ECC at a BI office at least 3 days before flying.
- Check your airline ticket for the terminal fee (look for “Passenger Service Charge”).
- If you stayed 1 year or more: check whether you owe the Travel Tax.
- Settle any overstay fines first — the BI will not issue an ECC with unpaid fines.
- Keep your ACR I-Card with your passport (you must show it at the airport).
- Arrive at the airport 3–4 hours early. Exit checks take time.
