You looked at your passport and realized your visa expired last week. Take a deep breath. You are not the first person to make this mistake, and you will not be the last. The Bureau of Immigration (BI) processes overstays every single day. The fix is simple, as long as you act quickly.

💡 The Golden Rule: Do not hide, and do not wait until you are at the airport. Go to a local BI office as soon as you realize the mistake. Pay the fine, get your official receipt, and your record is clean again.

Step-by-Step: How to Clear Your Record

  1. Count your exact overstay days. Look at the expiry date stamped or written in your passport. Remember: even one day late counts as a full month of overstay fines.
  2. Go to a BI office in person. Do this at least 3 to 5 working days before your flight. (See our BI Office Directory to find the closest one).
  3. Tell the officer the truth. Hand over your passport and say, “I accidentally overstayed and need to pay my fines and update my visa.”
  4. Pay the computation. The cashier will calculate your fine (₱500 per month) plus the Motion for Reconsideration fee and the missed extension fee. Pay in cash.
  5. Get your official receipt. The BI will stamp your passport with a new valid date and give you a receipt. Keep this receipt with your passport until you fly out of the country.

🚨 Why You Cannot Fix This at the Airport

Many travelers think they can just pay the fine at the airport on the day of their flight. This is a massive risk. The airport immigration desks are often not equipped to process complex overstay computations. If the system flags you, the airline will deny you boarding, you will miss your flight, and you will have to stay in the country for several more days to fix it at a main BI office.

🌏 Cultural Heads-Up: Patience and Politeness

When you walk up to the BI counter to confess an overstay, you might feel embarrassed. Don’t be. The officers see this daily. In Filipino culture, maintaining pakikisama (smooth, harmonious relations) is vital. Approach the counter with a calm smile and respectful language. Getting defensive or arguing about the fine will only slow down your process. A simple “Salamat po” (Thank you, respectfully) when they hand your passport back goes a long way.

🗣️ The Reality: What Expats Wish They Knew

  • Set a phone alarm. The #1 cause of overstaying is simply forgetting the date. The day you get your passport stamped, set a calendar alarm on your phone for 7 days before it expires.
  • Never use a “Fixer”. Men outside the BI office will offer to “make the overstay disappear” for a cash bribe. This is a scam. The BI database is digital and centralized. Only an official cashier receipt clears your record.
  • Over 6 months? Stop and read. If you have overstayed for more than 6 months, the process becomes a legal matter. You may need to hire an immigration lawyer to file a motion before the BI Commissioner. Do not just walk into a standard window.
