The Complete Guide (2026)

The Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV), administered by the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA), is the most popular long-term visa for foreigners aged 50 and above. It grants indefinite multiple-entry status and the right to reside permanently in the Philippines — but it requires a significant financial commitment and patience through a multi-month application process.

💡 TL;DR: Minimum age 50 (for SRRV Smile/Classic). Deposit USD $20,000 (Smile) or $50,000 (Classic, or $20k with pension). Processing 3–6 months. You cannot work, but you can own condo units and lease land.

The Three Main SRRV Programs

😊 SRRV Smile

Ages 50+ · For healthy retirees with no pension requirement.

$20,000 time deposit

Deposit must remain in a PRA-accredited bank. Cannot be converted to investment. Refundable upon cancellation.

🏛️ SRRV Classic

Ages 50+ · The most flexible option.

$10,000 (with pension) or $20,000 (without) — previously $50k

Deposit can be converted into eligible investments (condo, long-term lease) after 1 year. Most popular program among expats.

🤝 SRRV Human Touch

Ages 35+ · For retirees needing medical care.

$10,000 deposit + proof of monthly pension ($1,500+)

Designed for retirees requiring ongoing medical treatment or care in the Philippines.

Step-by-Step Application Process

  1. Gather documents from your home country. Police clearance (apostilled), medical clearance (apostilled), marriage certificate if applicable (apostilled), NBI clearance if you’ve been in PH over 30 days.
  2. Enter the Philippines on a tourist visa. Apply for the SRRV while in the country — you cannot apply from abroad.
  3. Open a PRA-accredited bank account and deposit the required USD amount. The bank issues a certification of deposit.
  4. Complete a medical exam at a PRA-accredited clinic in the Philippines (even if you have a foreign medical clearance).
  5. Submit the application to PRA (head office in Ortigas, Manila, or accredited satellite offices). Pay the one-time application fee (~$1,400 for principal applicant, ~$300 per dependent).
  6. Wait for approval — official timeline is 20–30 working days, reality is often 2–6 months.
  7. Receive your SRRV ID card and have your passport endorsed with the SRRV stamp at the Bureau of Immigration.

⚠️ Important Restrictions

  • No employment. You cannot work for a Philippine company. Teaching, consulting, or running a local business violates the terms.
  • Annual fee: $360 per year for up to 3 dependents (paid to PRA).
  • ACR I-Card required in addition to your SRRV ID.
  • Deposit stays in the bank — you earn interest, but principal cannot be withdrawn unless you cancel the visa.

🗣️ The Facebook Reality: What PRA Doesn’t Tell You

  • Bank deposit delays are real. Some accredited banks move slowly, especially for foreign-currency deposits. Open the account early in the process and follow up aggressively.
  • Document apostille is non-negotiable. If your home country is not part of the Apostille Convention (or your documents aren’t apostilled), PRA will reject your application. Sort this out before flying to PH.
  • NBI clearance takes 2–3 weeks in the Philippines — and is required if you’ve been in the country for more than 30 days. Plan your tourist visa timeline around it.
  • PRA office queues at Ortigas (Manila) can be 3–5 hours. Arrive at 7 AM or use satellite offices (Cebu, Davao, Angeles, Baguio) if possible.
  • Deposit amount has changed multiple times in recent years. Always verify current amounts directly with PRA before committing.
  • “Fixers” outside PRA offer to fast-track for a fee. Using them risks your application — PRA has publicly warned against this.
