The Complete Pre-Departure Checklist for the Philippines

The Philippines requires very little paperwork — but the few requirements that exist are enforced strictly, and usually not by Philippine Immigration. Your airline’s check-in staff in your home country is the real border. This page walks you through exactly what to prepare, and in what order.

⏰ THE 72-HOUR RULE: Within 72 hours before your flight arrives in the Philippines, you must complete the free eTravel registration at etravel.gov.ph. Without the QR code it generates, you cannot check bags or board. Everything else — passport validity, onward ticket, accommodation proof — should be printed and in your hand before you leave home.

The Pre-Departure Timeline

2–4 WEEKS BEFORE

Check the basics. Passport valid 6+ months beyond your stay? Onward or return ticket booked within your visa-free period? Nationality covered by visa-free entry, or do you need an e-Visa? If anything is missing, fix it now — not at the airport.

72–24 HOURS BEFORE

Complete eTravel registration. Use only the official free portal (etravel.gov.ph). When finished, screenshot the QR code AND print it. You will show it at check-in, sometimes at boarding, and again at Philippine Immigration.

THE NIGHT BEFORE

Print everything. Passport bio-page (2–3 copies), onward ticket, hotel booking for your first nights, eTravel QR code, and travel insurance if you have it. Put the paper copies in your hand luggage, not your checked bag.

AT CHECK-IN

Have documents ready before you reach the counter. Airline staff will verify your onward ticket and eTravel QR before issuing your boarding pass. Arrive early, stay calm, and hand over the papers without being asked.

The Two Essential Guides

SCAM ALERT📱

1.2.1 eTravel Registration Guide

The Printable Checklist

  • Passport valid 6+ months beyond your intended stay
  • Onward or return ticket within your visa-free period (or onward-ticket rental confirmation)
  • eTravel QR code — printed AND saved on your phone
  • Accommodation address for your first nights (hotel booking or host’s address)
  • Proof of funds or bank statement (only needed if sent to secondary inspection)
  • 2–3 photocopies of your passport bio-page (also essential for BI office visits later)
  • Travel insurance documents (optional but strongly recommended)

🗣️ The Facebook Reality: Where Travelers Actually Get Stopped

  • The airline is the real border. The vast majority of denied travelers never reach the Philippines — they are blocked at check-in in their home country over a missing onward ticket or eTravel QR.
  • Print, don’t show. Officers and agents trust paper. Phones run out of battery, screens crack, and airport Wi-Fi fails. A printed folder takes zero effort and removes all risk.
  • “I’ll extend later” is not an answer. Airlines only care that you leave within your initial 30/59 days. Plans to extend inside the Philippines are invisible to them.
  • eTravel is 100% FREE. Any website charging you to register is a scam. The official portal never asks for payment.
